Stop Guessing: Why Restriction Isn't the Same as Healing

Bloating shows up. Bowel habits get unpredictable. A food you've eaten your whole life suddenly doesn't sit right.

The instinct is almost always the same: cut out gluten. Cut out dairy. Cut out grains.

If you have coeliac disease, a diagnosed allergy, or an autoimmune condition like Hashimoto's, Graves', or psoriasis, then yes, targeted removal is evidence-based, and necessary. That's not what this is about.

This is about the much larger group of people who remove food after food, month after month, and end up eating less and less while feeling no better. If that's you, I want to explain why, and what works instead.

Your gut isn't a single strain problem, it's a diverse ecosystem

Your digestive system is home to trillions of microorganisms: bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and more, coexisting in a system we're still only partway through understanding. What we do know is that resilience doesn't come from any one "good" bacteria. It comes from diversity, or a wide, well-fed population working together.

Like the environment, your gut ecosystem is diverse and depends on homeostasis to survive.

Different species rely on different plant fibres, found across grains, legumes, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds. When you remove a whole food group without replacing what it was feeding, the effect isn't neutral. Research tracking dietary shifts has shown that diet can rapidly and reproducibly reshape the human gut microbiome (David et al., 2014), and comparative studies of global diets have linked lower dietary variety to reduced microbial diversity (De Filippo et al., 2010).

In practical terms, that means three things tend to happen when restriction goes on too long:

  • Microbial diversity drops, starving the beneficial bacteria that relied on what you removed.

  • Short-chain fatty acid production decreases and deprives your gut lining of the fuel and anti-inflammatory support it needs to function.

  • Digestive adaptability weakens, leaving your system more reactive to everyday food, not less.

So the diet that was meant to protect you can end up making your gut more fragile, not more resilient.

Stress isn't separate from this, it's part of the same ‘loop’

As the diet narrows, something else usually creeps in: hypervigilance.

Every meal becomes a calculation.

Eating out becomes a source of dread instead of connection.

This matters more than people realise, because chronic psychological stress speaks directly to the gut through the gut-brain axis, a well-documented, bidirectional communication network (Cryan et al., 2019).

In practice, that stress can:

  • Increase intestinal permeability; what's often called "leaky gut" through disruption of the tight junctions that hold your gut lining together.

  • Alter immune signalling and histamine release, which can show up as eczema, asthma, or hayfever.

  • Deplete protective bacteria like Lactobacillus, which help maintain your gut's mucus layer and communicate with your nervous system.

There's also emerging evidence that specific probiotic and postbiotic strains can help modulate this exact stress response which can go towards further supporting the nervous system.

Put together, a shrinking diet and rising stress don't just coexist → they compound. The gut loses the microbial support it needs right as it needs it most.

Beyond probiotics: what rebuilding actually looks like

If your gut ecosystem is already under strain, taking a generic probiotic often isn't enough. It's a bit like adding one type of seed to a garden that's lost its soil, it needs more than a new species, it needs the conditions to actually survive.

Synbiotics pair live bacterial strains with the specific fibres those strains need to thrive → think kefir with green banana starch, miso with edamame, or sauerkraut with garlic. Restriction without investigation isn't free, even if it feels like the safer option. Over time, it tends to cost you in three ways:

  • Nutritionally; fewer fermentable fibres, resistant starches, and polyphenols means less microbial diversity, and often, quiet B-vitamin depletion, which your hormones, nervous system, and metabolism all rely on.

  • Financially; trending supplements and protocols often treat the symptom in front of you, not the reason it's there, and the cost of trial and error adds up.

  • Emotionally; food stops being nourishment and becomes a source of stress, and you lose touch with what your body is actually telling you.

Where to actually start

Healing doesn't begin with removing more. It begins with understanding why your system is struggling in the first place — which usually means looking at:

  • Your history - when symptoms started, your family and health background, your current diet.

  • Your life - sleep, stress load, day-to-day habits.

  • The right testing - to find actual root drivers and deficiencies rather than guessing at them.

  • Your current medications and supplements, checked for interactions and gaps.
